OUR STORY
Southlands Valley is a bit different from other English vineyards. Owned by the family since 2014, we are run as a community enterprise with the support of a cooperative of local workers, who each have the responsibility to tend and care for a number of rows of vines. Each member of the cooperative is as passionate about creating an exceptional sparkling wine as Sarah, our founder and inspiration behind the project.
We have a tiny plot of land – just 2 hectares – in West Chiltington, near Storrington, West Sussex, on a South facing slope to the North of the South Downs. It is a rich Lower Greensand loam, ideal soil for growing our Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. Our wine is produced by the renowned Wiston Estate Winery using traditional methods – a minimum 4 year process including the second fermentation in the bottle. We would expect to harvest around 10 tonnes of grapes each year, producing over 7500 bottles of sparkling wine – although late frosts or a wet summer or autumn can play havoc with the yields.
Unique, exciting and different every year. Each year in consultation with our winemaker Marcus Rayner-Ward, we produce a new vintage of our Smock Alley sparkling wines – each wine reflecting the annual journey of the vines over the past year from pruning through to harvest.
